This full-day, hands-on course will give participants the opportunity to go through the diagnostic, treatment planning, and executive process of applying various mucogingival surgical therapies within the realm of periodontics. The day will begin with a discussion about pre-surgical assessment of patients. The participants will then be introduced to their patients for the day – fresh pig jaws.
The first part of the morning session will entail a brief discussion of indications and contra-indications to augment attached gingiva via a gingival graft. Each participant will perform the procedure on their pig jaw.
The morning session will continue with root coverage for treatment of recession. Indications and contra-indications for this procedure will be presented, as well as a step-by-step sequence for how to execute treatment. Treatment will focus on a classical approach to a single tooth recession.
In the afternoon, the focus will shift to more advanced techniques for root coverage, as well as techniques for treating recessions on multiple contiguous teeth. Techniques employing both autogenic and allogenic soft tissue grafts will be covered. All participants will once again get a chance to perform the various techniques on their pig jaws.
Learning Outcomes:
Recognize the appropriate pre-surgical assessment for mucogingival surgical therapies.
Differentiate between the indications and contraindications for root coverage and gingival augmentation.
Apply the technique of gingival augmentation via free gingival grafting.
Implement the technique of root coverage, using both autogenic and allogenic soft tissue grafts, on both single and multiple contiguous teeth.
