Despite our best efforts, patients sometimes need surgical intervention. Join Dr. Sam Malkinson and DCI and embark on the first in a series of foundational courses to take your surgical skills to the next level.

Course Description:

Ridge preservation after a tooth extraction will preserve bone structure and will set you up for success by setting the stage/foundation for future restorative work. The procedure involves filling the socket left by the extracted tooth with a bone graft material to encourage bone growth.

Beginning with a short lecture, participants will learn the rationale behind ridge preservation, and will see the results through case presentations. Following this, participants will have a chance to apply their knowledge and skills on pig jaws, using current materials and techniques.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Explain what happens to the alveolar ridge following dental extractions

  • Recognize the common materials and techniques used to preserve the alveolar ridge

  • Formulate an idea of what results to expect from the procedure, as well as see how these results influence the subsequent implant placement

  • Apply their theoretical knowledge of ridge preservation to actual clinical situations commonly encountered in practice

Course Description:

The process of suturing can mean the difference between a short and relatively painless healing period and failure of the procedure.

Starting with a brief lecture, participants will learn the rationale for suturing, and will explore the do’s and don’ts of the technique. Following this, participants will have a chance to apply their knowledge and skills on pig jaws, using a variety of different suture materials and techniques to cover a multitude of clinical situations.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the physiology behind how suturing positively influences post-operative healing

  • Recognize the different suture materials and techniques

  • Apply their theoretical knowledge of suturing to actual clinical situations commonly encountered in practice
